Do You Have the Canadian Urge?

Hi, ! Welcome to May!

From “April showers bring May Flowers”, and “every cloud has a silver lining”, to telling a bride that it’s lucky to have it rain on her wedding day we have a way trying to put an optimistic slant on unpleasant situations. Let me know if you have a favourite saying - or one that drives you nuts!

The investment world has a saying that, although true, is probably as comforting as many of the most popular sayings. You’ve likely heard this from an advisor before, and quite possibly I have said it to you: “Markets go up 70% of the time.” When things are going poorly, you don’t want to hear “when life gives you lemons…”, just as I’m sure you don’t want to hear “markets go up 70% of the time.” You want a strategy!

Prior to partnering with Harbourfront and seeing that there are different options, I thought that we had to take part in the 30% declines to enjoy the benefits of the 70% - we don’t!

Have a quick read of our team’s April Commentary (here) and let me know if there’s anything you want to dive deeper into. You can also see below what happens if you don’t have to climb out of a hole like most portfolios did from 2022.

I recently came across a couple articles that had me thinking about “the Canadian way”. We’re largely known for our politeness around the world, but one blogger talked about something she called the “Canadian Urge”. You can check out the article here. The article talks about how Canadians will get outside anytime there’s a sunny day, even in the dead of winter. I know I’m definitely feeling that “urge” more now that the weather is starting to get nicer.

I’m going to start this by saying, I feel bad for anyone whose actual name is Karen. But on that note, a recent survey came out trying to find the “Karen” capital of Canada, and it is in Ontario. I had my guesses when I read the headline - before you read the article, let me know what city you think took the prize! Read the fun report of where scored top marks here.

Give in to your Canadian Urge and get outside this weekend, and please don’t be a Karen!

Until next week,

Trevor & the Cherry Hill Team
